SUFFRAGETTE [2015 October]
Possibly a heavyweight contender at the film awards next year, upcoming British drama Suffragette boasts a stellar cast led by Carey Mulligan, multiple Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter. The historical drama which focuses on the story of women fighting for the right to vote in the early 20th-century is directed by Sarah Gavron. I've been eager but yet to watch Gavron's "Brick Lane" (2006) which gave her BAFTA & BIFA award nominations. Dignity, purity & hope are the main themes encapsulated in this film written by "Shame" (2011) writer Abi Morgan

WOULD YOU WATCH ROCKY'S SPIN-OFF "CREED"?

Creed is an upcoming sports drama film which revolves around
Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), son of Apollo Creed. Considered as a semi spin-off and 7th instalment of the Rocky franchise, the story will follow Adonis' journey to Philadelphia to track Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and asks him to be his trainer. Never really a fan of the Rocky films, but I will give this one a try, as I do admire Michael B. Jordan as an actor, and the fact that it will be directed by Ryan Coogler, whose first feature film, Fruitvale Station made quite an impression for me

“Amy and I were creatively made for each other. We have different flavors. It’s been the most fun experience of my life. We start the day off on the phone, laughing. And then we send each other pages. And we crack up"

- Jennifer Lawrence, on her friendship and business collab with Amy Schumer. The two may have just met for a few months, but they've become pals quickly, and not only are they going to star as sisters in an upcoming movie, they are both writing the screenplay. The Hunger Games star was impressed after watching Schumer's Trainwreck, decided to email her and soon they were text buddies

THE CRIME OF FATHER AMARO ~ EL CRIMEN DEL PADRE AMARO [2002, Mexico & Spain - Spanish]

Touted as one of the most controversial films which brought the Roman Catholic groups in Mexico fighting to stop the film from being screened, and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2002; I won't deny that I was slightly disappointed after watching. First things first, it's not terribly controversial, really. Politics and sexual passions threatening to corrupt a church, not the first to be made; and the only way the film could go to really impress (in my opinion at least) is to go 'dark' all the way. Loosely based on the novel O Crime do Padre Amaro (1875), it tells the story of a newly ordained priest, Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal), who is assigned to the church in a small Mexican town, and quickly finds himself embroiled in the politics of the local clerics and a heated affair with devout Sunday school teacher, Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon). My main concern with the film is its consistency, switching between satire and melodrama. At one end you get scenes like kids spreading jam on communion wafers, and another instance where you find Amaro and Amelia engaging in the sexual rendezvous, whilst a spastic girl jerks and wails in the next room. Then you get scenes of the two characters wallowing in their heated passion like how you'd encounter in any soap opera.

The film however has its merits, thanks to the strong performances by the main characters especially Gael Garcia and Sancho Gracia. Director Carrera manages to make the story heartfelt, and does keep audience engaged throughout. There are many layers of corruption imbued here, and it can be a strength or otherwise depending on how you slice it. At least it kept me going, wanting to know the actual crime of the priest.

SOUTHPAW [2015, USA - English]

Most boxing movies are about redemption, Southpaw isn't an exception. Broad strokes considered, it does follow the expected trajectory. Film opens with Billy Hope, reigning Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion, winning yet another emotional fight, seemingly at the height of his career when a sudden tragic incident sends his career and life on a downward spiral. The strong-casted sports drama however, is not just about throwing punches, flaring testosterones in the ring and getting you riled up when the protagonist finally redeems himself with the final fight's victory. Director Antoine Fuqua shared during an interview, “I didn't really see it as a boxing movie -- I saw it about a man who's grieving and has to learn to be a father." And indeed, the salient dynamic of this film lies within the emotional grit and struggles which take place outside the ring. It was not so much the Rocky Balboa versus his opponents formula, it was in fact Billy Hope against himself. The story eventually centres on his journey of becoming not just a better fighter, but a better person and most importantly a better father.

Jake Gyllenhaal again proves himself as the force to be reckoned with. Teaming up with trainer Terry Claybon, Gyllenhaal's transformation into a muscle-packed Billy Hope requires extensive & vigorous workouts for 8 months, including running 8 miles and 500 - 1000 sit-ups a day. What the 34 year-old actor brought to the table of course is much more than just sweat & muscles, Hope's complex nature where no one really could understand him except his wife (played by Rachel McAdams), and his constant use of anger in dealing with all aspects of life both in & out of ring, are certainly perpetuated by Gyllenhaal's stellar performance.

Complementing Gyllenhaal is Forest Whitaker, who has been accepting a number of rather unchallenging roles recently. Whitaker is a treat to watch, portraying Tick Willis, a retired fighter & the unlikely savior who Hope turns to when his life hits rock bottom.

Not going to agree with most critics who blame the film to be weighed down by genre cliches. A typical boxing film would have never caught my fancy, it was the 'over-focusing' of the melodrama & roller coaster of the main characters' emotions outside the ring that got me engaged. It was the 'cliches' which made this film believable for me. In fact, why would Fuqua make it any other way? This is how the harsh reality of boxing world is. Actual boxing luminaries Thomas Hearns & Bronco McKart watched the premiere and gave the film praise, and agreed that it was even better than the Oscar-winning Rocky. They found the plot spot on, the struggles much more relatable, and the story gives a more realistic view compared to their cartoon-type hits given by Rocky Balboa.

I'm definitely going to watch it again.

Anticipated-Watch - THE DANISH GIRL

This is a definite concoction for the Oscars. Helmed by Tom Hooper, Oscar winning director of The King's Speech (2010, by far one of my most favorite films) and Les Misérables (2012), The Danish Girl is based on the true story of Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sexual reassignment surgery. And who better to take on this role but 2014 Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, who gave us such commitment in his physically-challenged portrayal of Stephen Hawking. The first posters for the transgender period drama show nothing but another drastic and amazing transformation for the 33 year-old Brit actor. The story will follow the life of Einat Wegener, originally a landscape painter, who realizes that she wants to pursue a life as a transgender after posing in women’s clothes for her wife (Alicia Vikander). The Danish Girl has been selected to be screened in the main competition section of the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, and it has been selected to be shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival

anticipated-Watch – EVEREST

Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, Everest is a 2015 British-American thriller-adventure drama starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Based on the real life events of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, crew members travelled from Nepal to the Otzal Alps in Italy, and continued further sequences in Iceland for the filming. Kormákur insisted that in order for Everest to be taken seriously and even remotely genuine the shoot needed to take place under absolute intense circumstances. Reproducing the scenes in any other fashion would have been insulting to the viewers. The film is set for a September 18, 2015 release date

There's no stopping director Alejandro G. Iñárritu now. Not only have all his five feature films garnered wide acclaim so far, but he's certainly even more fueled for perfection after his huge success with Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). His latest film The Revenant went into production in September and was supposed to wrap in March. Shooting will continue, while the budget climbed past US$95 million (insiders predicting it will most likely reach US$135). Iñárritu made the unusual choice to shoot the film in sequence, using only natural light. His ambitious methods have drawn splitting critics even within their crew members, with some saying that the film could turn out to be epic, while some describing the filming as by far the worst experience of their careers, citing it as "a living hell".

Inspired by real events, The Revenant follows 19th century explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) through deep snow and ordeals, battling with Native Americans and experiencing near-fatal mauling by a bear. Iñárritu had complimented DiCaprio, saying "He’s a brave, incredible actor. I’m so surprised about how good he is. I think there’s a profound understanding of humanity that I can see through his eyes.” During the filming of the battle scene, Iñárritu decided that a naked character should be dragged along the ground. Whilst the director maintains that he was fully aware and concerned about the actor's genitals being dragged, it has sparked rumors from insiders that the actor ended up in great pain during the shoot. Iñárritu has dismissed that as a lie.

To date many of the crew members insist that a lot of the misery could have have been avoided - and money saved - if some parts of the movie had been conceived with computer-generated effects. Iñárritu countered "That's exactly what I didn't want. If we end up in greenscreen with coffee and everyone having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of shit...when you see the film, you will see the scale of it. And you will say 'Wow'." The trailer looks absolutely stunning. I personally can't wait!

"The first time we were going down the runway...I told the crew, I said, 'Look. If I look terrified, don't stop. Don't stop for anything. We're gonna keep going, because I'm acting. No matter what you see me do"
- Tom Cruise, on his latest death-defying stunt from Mission : Impossible - Rogue Nation. Cruise is one of the few actors left who still insist on performing most of his own stunts in his films. The 53 year-old actor is not stopping just yet, as he has confirmed his involvement in the 6th installment, adding that the shoot will commence next year

IN SECRET [2013, US - English]

Elizabeth Olsen is a promising actor, admired her performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011 (which she was nominated and won numerous awards including Most Promising Performer at Chicago Film Critics Association), and she even managed to look convincing through her small role in Gareth Edward’s version of Godzilla in 2014. In Charlie Stratton’s erotic thriller In Secret, Olsen is joined by credible cast Jessica Lange, Oscar Isaac and Tom Felton. It tells the story of a young woman, Thérèse (Olsen) who lives in rural France with her overbearing aunt (Lange) and is forced into a dissatisfying marriage to her sickly cousin Camille (Felton). Suffering in her oppressive marriage, Thérèse soon embarks on a reckless and doomed affair with Camille’s childhood friend, the suave Laurent (Isaac) who can give her everything Camille can’t.
Though it has been done many a time, such a plot is always intriguing to me. The culminating pace of two secret lovers from their first forbidden moments of attraction and desire, right up to an insidious ploy of murder at the end. The main characters are convincing and draw strong chemistry. Olsen’s portrayal is profuse in her yearning for sexual release. Then comes Isaac as the convincing free-spirited artist crackling with sexual electricity, perfect answer to her suffocating marriage. Lange is at her best, as usual. Her character shows us the extreme emotions she goes through, and so much can be felt even with just her darting eyes as she lies there after a stroke-induced paralysis towards the second half of the film.
My issue with the film is the pace. It was definitely rushed. Perhaps potentially a better fit for a mini-series, audience should get to feel Thérèse’s sense of being trapped, to truly appreciate the desperation and push for her character to go into the heated and scandalous affair. That was clearly lacking to me. The story was soon hastened into her little secret rendezvous with Laurent, and I wished a little more time could’ve been spent there as well on teasing the audience with the danger and suspense the two characters had to go through in their clandestine meetings. It is after all an erotic thriller. It is an adequate effort, but is it scandalous, is it really provocative, not enough for me.
Director Charlie Stratton has been said to have failed in delivering the dark passion of its original story in the classic 1867 novel Thérèse Raquin. Critics will be rather harsh, considering that this is a highly acclaimed piece of work from Émile Zola who was nominated for Nobel Prize in Literature.

Who's stoked about the upcoming Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice. Though we shall only see it in March next year, so much hype has been created around it already, including an interesting trailer. Ben Affleck plays an older & wearier Batman. "He’s on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it. But this guy is further down the line and has become more embittered and cynical," Affleck shares. Worried that Superman’s unequaled power makes him more of a potential fascistic overlord than the hero we need, he makes it his duty to take him out of the sky for good. Apart from Henry Cavill as Superman, there'll also be appearances by Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) & Aquaman (Jason Momoa)
