POLTERGEIST [2015, US - English]

- If there's ever an attempt to remake monster horror classics like The Exorcist & Poltergeist, it better be just as good but with a really clever twist to make the audience leaving the theatre still loving the original & admiring the newer version. Let's face it, it is tough if not impossible to please fans of classic hits like 1982's Poltergeist, conceived, co-written & produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper. And true enough, director Gil Kenan's remake has been mostly pounced with much negative reviews

- In plot terms, the remake sticks close to its source; a middle-class family moving into a quiet suburban neighborhood, and finds their home haunted by angry presence that takes the youngest child hostage. The iconic moments are preserved as well —the little girl fixating on the TV, gnarled tree coming alive & dragging the boy from the bedroom window, and the bedroom closet that opens up and swallows the little girl. With better technology, I'd say these moments are executed fairly well. The special effects allow for more visual tricks this time around

- However as we move deeper into the story, you can't help but feel almost everything presented is cribbed right out of the original film. And that's the fundamental issue which is making most critics unsettled & disgruntled. For those who haven't seen the first film, it may still pull off as a thrilling piece of work; but most fans of the original film wound need to be very forgiving. I would still give credit to the entertainment offered, just that I wish they would have put in more effort to pull a good twist to differentiate it from the 1982 version. How can they not foresee this, audience is bound to compare! All in all, I would classify it as paying competent homage without adding anything distinctive enough to make it memorable

Rating : C+
