TOMORROWLAND [2015, US - English]
- Disney decides to adopt another of its theme park attractions for their latest sci-fi adventure. In Tomorrowland, Britt Robertson stars as a positive and strong-willed teenager who discovers an interdimensional utopia, and together with a scientist (George Clooney) and android (Raffey Cassidy) they embark on an adventure in preventing earth'sapocalypse
- The idea and basis are both enchanting, where the story conjures much of our curiosity in the beginning as Robertson stumbles upon the visually captivating utopia. The message is noble as well, elevating endearment towards earth, reminding us about the importance of faith and positivity as the answer to a better future. The ambitious film directed by Brad Bird however dwindles into weak scripting, muddled storyline and the slightly above 2-hour adventure starts to be plagued by many all too familiar clichés. Whilst the chemistry amongst Clooney, Robertson & Cassidy suffers (Clooney to me has always been a one-dimensional actor who's highly overrated and this film yet again affirms my view), the retro-infused sci-fi spectacular by Bird eventually becomes an experience we are all familiar with each Disneyland ride, waiting far too long for the fun to begin
- The film costs $US330 million to produce and market, and has become one of the biggest flops in cinema history. Projected to make no more than $US200 million in total, Bird who has given us good films like Up and The Incredibles, joins Jupiter Ascending & Seventh Son as another 2015 big-budget box-office bomb
Rating : D+
