FREEHELD [2015 October]
Fresh off of her first Oscar victory (Still Alice, 2014), Julianne Moore is set to showcase another strong Oscar-contending role in the latest American drama film directed by Peter Sollett Raising (Victor Vargas, 2002), titled Freeheld. Based on a true story, Moore takes on the role of Laurel Hester, a New Jersey police detective who falls in love and begins a partnership with Stacie Andree (Ellen Page), a car mechanic. Diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, she appeals the county's board of chosen freeholders with the hopes of ensuring that her pension benefits will be passed on to Stacie, but is rejected. Page who came out during a Human Rights Campaign THRIVE conference, quickly jumped into the role, sharing that the story was in line with her inner journey in coming out, adding “For me, lots of stuff surfaced [playing Stacie]. Recreating a sort of closeted relationship in a film caused some stuff to surface, for sure. And then there’s [the matter] of speaking up or potentially owning an identity that I think does require a responsibility of trying to help move things forward. For Stacie, it was more complicated, because her being fully involved in that activism meant accepting that the love of her life was going to die. But when she finally managed, in some way, to accept that idea, I think she could fully give herself to the activist part of it all.”
Also starring Steve Carell, Luke Grimes and Michael Shannon, Freeheld will have its World Premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and hits theatres in October
