ROOM [2015, Canada & Ireland - English]
Written by Irish-Canadian author Emma Donoghue, Room is a novel which won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prize regional prize (Caribbean and Canada) and shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Telling the harrowing story from the perspective of a five-year-old boy Jack, who is being held captive in a small room along with his mother; this 2010 novel blew me away. And now director Lenny Abrahamson is bringing Room to the big screens, with the same title it stars Brie Larson, Joan Allen, William H. Macy, Sean Bridgers and Jacob Tremblay (as Jack). The film's premiere at the recent Telluride Film Festival put the audience in tears and brought a raucous standing ovation. Donoghue who wrote the screenplay herself, shared - “I don’t think either of us (she and the director) wanted to tell a freakish true crime story, not a bit. It takes an odd premise in order to shine light on the most ordinary universal human experiences across the whole continuum … the challenge was to find the absolute ordinary in the bizarre." The film is scheduled to be released in October.
